Jails and prisons can both be run as organizations. The title of the  corrections administrators of jails and prisons are different. In a  prison, the administrator is titled a warden. In jails, the  administrator is most likely going to be the sheriff. The sheriff is  more connected to the community. The sheriff is actually voted in by the  citizens of the community. The warden is usually not as well-known.

Prisons are usually run by the state’s central office. The mission of  most prisons is to provide a safe and secure environment for staff and  inmates, as well as programs for offenders that can assist them after  release. The central office of the prison system has many different  departments that are responsible for all of the different functions  within the system. The office of the director sets the policy for all  wardens and prisons to follow in regards to management and inmate  treatment. The administrations division is responsible for budget  development, auditing, and new construction of prisons. The correctional  programs division is responsible for all of the programs and services  provided by the prison such as education, mental health services, and  religious services. The medical or health care division is responsible  for making sure medical services are effective as possible. The human  resource management division is responsible for everything that has to  do with employees including hiring, training, retirement, etc.
