Project description
Description:
Paper (750 word limit): From a biomedical perspective, choose a disease or health
issue. Explain what is known about the etiology (causes) of that disease and how it is
treated. Identify the major outstanding questions about this disease. The
disease/health issue you select cannot be malaria, stress or obesity nor can it be one
of the group presentation topics (please see blackboard for list of group topics). Your
score on this assignment constitutes 15% of your final grade.
Grading Rubric for Individual Assignment #2
Grading rubrics are designed to ensure consistency and are provided as a courtesy to
students. They are guidelines as opposed to strict rules and are not intended to serve
as a template for your paper. A good paper is logically organized and builds a
concrete argument.
1. Content and analysis (50%)
a. The assignment should clearly and correctly explain the etiology of the
disease/health issue. (Tip: Do not simply list the causes. Instead, paint
a vivid picture of the disease mechanism. Show how it works!)
b. The assignment should clearly and correctly describe treatments of the
disease/health issue. (Tip: Again, do not simply list these. Instead,
relate interventions to the condition’s etiology.)
c. The assignment should clearly identify the major outstanding questions
about this disease/health issue. (Tip: Do not simply state these
projections. Ideally, these will flow from the other points you’ve already
made about etiology and treatments.)
2. Quality of writing (30%).
a. The assignment should be clearly organized and presented in a logical
manner.
b. Information should be organized in paragraphs. Each paragraph should
begin with a topic sentence. There should be a logical flow between
paragraphs.
c. The assignment should be written in academic prose, using complete
sentences and should be free of grammatical errors.
d. The main arguments or claims stated by the writer should be supported by
relevant evidence, examples, and/or statistics. The writer should make
explicit connections between works cited and their own ideas to create
a logical flow of ideas.
3. Appropriateness of paper and format (20%)
a. References should be presented in accepted academic format and ideas that
are not your own should be cited.
b. The assignment should not contain extensive or unnecessary quotations of
text from published sources.
c. All sources should be academically acceptable sources.
d. All sources referred to in the text of the assignment should be listed in a
reference section at the end of the assignment.
