Here are some examples:In Gloria Naylor’s essay “A Question of Language,” she shows us how a single word both shapes a young girl’s perceptions of reality and reflects a young boy’s perceptions of reality.Ahmir Questlove Thompson and Judith Ortiz Cofer show us that you don’t have to call someone a bad word to communicate prejudice—you can communicate it through body language.In his poem “Theme for English B,” Langston Hughes’ use of the words “true” and “truth” demonstrates the power of language to reflect his perceptions of reality.Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to persuade your audience that communication is powerful using academic sources.Audience: Write your paper for an audience not in this class. A convention of college writing (whether persuasive or expository) is that it is written for people not in the class where the assignment is given. This means you must orient readers to your sources and define the ideas you use. .Organization: This paper should have an introduction that ends with a clear thesis or claim expressed in one or two sentences, a body of four or more paragraphs that build on each other to support the thesis, and a conclusion.English 099 students must write a 3-page paper using at least two class sources.English 101 students must write 4 pages and use at least two class readings.Evidence: Use ideas, details and quotations from the readings to support your thesis about the meaning of the text(s) and reasons why communication is so powerful.Works Cited: Since this paper makes use of sources outside yourself, you must have a works cited page that lists your sources. Please use the Works Cited page available in the Week 7 module.Format: type and double-space your paper in 11- or 12-point font on 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper with 1-inch margins. Put your name, the date and class in a top corner, single-spaced. Center your title. If you decide to focus on a text, write down the communication concepts you plan to write about.
