1. Read the following article: Harden RM & Crosby J (2000). AMEE Medical Education Guide No. 20. The good teacher is more than a lecturer: the twelve roles of the teacher. Medical Teacher 22:334-347.
For brevity, focus on the 6 areas of activity for the teacher in the article (i.e. information provider, role model, facilitator, assessor, planner, and resource developer). Address at least the following:
• Your summary of the 6 areas of activity for the teacher.
• Not all teachers are competent in all areas, nor can that be expected. Which of the 6 areas of activity for the teacher do you believe is/are your strength(s)?
• Referring to the 6 areas of activity for the teacher, pick one that you feel is a weakness. Explain why you think this is a weak area and identify 2-3 suggestions on how you think that you could strengthen that area. For example, you could do some research on your weakness, read a book, and attend a conference or continuing education workshop.
• Look at Table #1 on page 6 and the associated survey on Table #2 on page 7. Look at the mean ratings for each of the twelve roles in Table #1. Look at either the highest or lowest rating. Include a brief summary on whether you agree or disagree with that rating
Note: If you are not currently teaching, you only have responses indicating your preferred personal future commitment to these teaching roles.
