The Family Life, Religious Patterns and Practices and Other Social Interactions of Cubans in America.

The second chapter (6-8 pages) should be titled, “The Family Life, Religious Patterns and Practices and Other Social Interactions of [insert the name of your group] in America.”

Focusing only on the group’s U.S experience, this chapter must succinctly, but substantially, discuss:

o Some of the group’s cultural proclivities and paradigms in relation to their traditional and current family life and structure, especially in terms of : parent/child roles, male/female relationships, child rearing practices, intergenerational conflicts, food preferences, dress codes, religious practices and/or spirituality and other social interactional practices.

o Provide information on the impact of the American brand of cultural and institutional racism on the family and social experiences of the group— give examples.

o Especially indicate to what extent are there indicators of external and intra-group sexism, colorism, able-bodism, and heterosexism reflected in the home/family life, as well as in the overall cultural life of the group.

o Especially emphasize the strengths of the group’s family life/socio-cultural traditions, in terms of the groups past and present social “agonies and ecstasies.” Be certain to identify some of the major institutions or cultural arrangements/outlets the group has historically developed to help deal with their social situations, as well as to foster their triumphs and perseverance and to collectively empower themselves. Note: You are free to recap or expand on some of the points that you may have made in chapter one in order to further highlight the group’s strengths and ability to face their adversities, and to try to consistently have rewarding life experiences.

o Attach an “Epilogue” to this chapter – 1-2 extra pages– wherein you briefly but substantively discuss the implications of the overall knowledge derived from your research study, and from the panel presentations, for professional social workers’ mandate to be culturally competent practitioners – reflect on the first four chapters of the Lum and Diller textbooks as well as other scholarly works to document your points. Finalize your epilogue by discussing how this research study, and what you gained from the panel presentations, will affect your future professional social work career. Also tell how you will use this knowledge in your continued educational endeavors to become a culturally competent social worker and, by effect, a culturally competent human being.

The discussion of the important themes and issues manifested in this chapter must be based on your use of relevant books (including the course textbooks, handouts, and the Master Bibliography in the syllabus), and social science journal articles. Although, I prefer that you use and/or cite primary scholarly works, you are allowed to also use/cite some secondary scholarly sources—i.e. scholars quoting other scholars’ works. You must have at least six scholarly references for each chapter, in accordance with the stipulations about references found in the course syllabus. Please provide an appropriately formatted reference page at the end of the chapter.

Notes:
You also required to look for and use as many scholarly works that are written by knowledgeable and/or academically acclaimed members of the group you are researching. It is very important to understand the group’s experiences from the perspectives of the group, itself.
